Understanding Intimacy with God in John 14

It would be too easy to simply dwell on the first six verses of the Gospel of John chapter 14. Often used at funerals as an assurance of the next life, it is rather more than having a place saved in heaven. It is more about the intimacy we have in God.

“In” is the word that has been chosen, deliberately, not with, but an intimacy that is abiding in us, and us in God.

Stephen reveals the ongoing, perpetual, and eternal intimacy between the Son and the Father. Peter encourages us to be just in our doings because we are chosen to be in God.

Jesus then provides a path that leads the Way to the Father, the Truth in the Son, and the gift of Life from the very breath of God (pneuma).

And what follows with Philip is the ultimate call to intimacy in Christ. Jesus reveals the intimacy that is promised and exists in God’s abiding presence. Soon to face the moment of trial, he prays for peace as the supper ends, and they go into the night. Within three days, they will once again be in the room with the reality of the resurrection, the Risen Lord who greets them just as he assures them now, “Peace be with you.”
